What is the Eligibility Criteria for the Chevening Scholarships for Indian Students?

To be eligible for these scholarships, you must fulfill the following criteria:

Nationality: Must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country.

Return Commitment: Must return to India for at least 2 years after the scholarship ends.

Education: Hold a degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 honors (upper second-class).

Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years (2,800 hours) of work experience required.

University Offers: Apply to 3 UK courses and secure at least one unconditional offer.

Second Master’s: Allowed with valid justification aligned with your career goals.

Eligibility for Work Experience

Minimum 2 years (2,800 hours) of work experience required.

Accepted experience includes: full-time/part-time jobs, internships (paid/unpaid), and voluntary work.

Experience can be gained before, during, or after undergrad (excluding mandatory internships).

You can list up to 15 work experiences; choose those with the most hours.

Current employment is allowed—just ensure your employer supports your leave if selected.

What is the Selection Process for the Chevening Scholarships for Indian Students?

Ineligible applications are eliminated.

An independent committee evaluates and scores applications.

The British Embassy/High Commission reviews and selects candidates.

Shortlisted candidates submit references and academic documents before facing an interview panel.

Selected applicants must provide an unconditional UK university offer after interviews.

There is no age limit to apply for the Chevening Scholarship.

Chevening no longer has a separate English language requirement. Applicants must meet the English requirements set by their chosen UK university.

Chevening does not specify a minimum GPA. Meeting the GPA required for admission to your chosen UK university is sufficient. Check your university’s website for course-specific GPA criteria.

Generally, students cannot receive additional funding while holding a Chevening Scholarship. However, if extra financial support is essential, you may contact the program officer with full details of the other scholarship for consideration.

Chevening Scholarships are available for full-time, taught master’s programs starting in the autumn term (September or October). Research-based or part-time courses are not eligible.

Part-time and distance learning courses are excluded from the Chevening Scholarships. Courses having less than 9 months and more than 12 months duration, Ph.D. or DPhil, and taught more than one month outside the UK are also ineligible for the scholarship.
